One day – that’s all the time we have before we take the bullet train to Levi’s province tomorrow. Isaac and I arrived in Beijing yesterday around 1 AM CST, and 2 PM China time. Our flights were fine, but being on a plane for 15 hours becomes torturous at the end! We did nap off and on, just to be startled awake by someone slamming an overhead compartment shut, or mild turbulence. Isaac and I got up about ten times just to stretch and walk.
The moment we arrived at our hotel, the smell of curry wafting through the air brought me back to our first adoption trip just 18 months ago. It’s good to be back in familiar territory – so many good memories of my time here with Mike, and it is easier the second time around.
Today our guide took us all around Beijing – First to the Great Wall at Juyongguan Pass. Mike and I were there last year and it was so great to be able to share that with Isaac. We climbed up to the top tower! If we would’ve had more time, we probably would’ve walked the wall along the top of the mountain.
Before we left the Great Wall, I looked up this artist. I bought a print from him in 2014 and forgot it on the tour bus. When I saw this man today I was so tickled! And he had a watercolor painting very much like the first one I bought from him. It says “national flower” in Mandarin, describing the peony. Peonies also remind me of my Grandma Agnes! I actually planted 2 peonies after our trip to China. Of course, I was sure that I didn’t forget the print today!
After the Great Wall, we went to the Hutong area of Beijing (look it up!) where we rode on a rickshaw and toured a local family’s home. The lady who opened her home to us also paints the inside of glass ornaments with a curved brush. I bought a small one for Selah and the woman wrote Selah’s Chinese name while we watched – amazing talent! Isaac picked up the brush and tried his hand at it too – fortunately the lady was able to erase his marks and start over, ha!
What a day in Beijing! Tonight we are walking down the street from our hotel to see the sights before we pack it up in the morning and catch the train to Taiyuan, Shanxi around 12 noon. One day closer to meeting Levi!!!
